What is a Venous Leg Ulcer?

A venous ulcer or venous leg ulcer is a slow-healing sore on the leg that results from poor circulation. Somewhat more than 1% of Americans wind up getting a venous ulcer. Common causes include aging, smoking, obesity, diabetes, leg injuries and varicose veins.

Characteristics of a venous ulcer

  • Leg pain or achiness
  • Itchiness or burning sensation at the wound site
  • Swelling in the leg, especially at the end of the day
  • Discolored skin in the area above the ankle
  • Moderate to heavy drainage from the wound

Treatment for Venous Ulcers

Venous ulcers are slow to heal since the nutrients and oxygen needed for the healing process are impeded by poor circulation. As is the case with diabetic foot ulcers, the treatment for venous ulcers involves a complicated process, sometimes involving surgery, that promotes better circulation and speeds up healing. Patients must adhere closely to the advice of their medical team for successful results.
